Vigan City emerged as Grand Slam Champions

IMG_9013The city government of Vigan hosted the opening game of the 3RD Cong. Ronald V. Singson Inter-Town Basketball Tournament last April 9, 2014 at Plaza Burgos.

The tournament was well represented by the eleven towns from the 1ST District of the Province of Ilocos Sur. Cong. Ronald V. Singson led the ceremonial toss to formally start the tournament.

The tournament format for the elimination games was single round robin, with 9-games guaranteed for each team. Teams are then seeded by basis on their win-loss records. Vigan City led the pack with an 8 win – 1 loss record, with the only loss coming from Caoayan.

The top eight (8) teams compete in the quarter finals for the cross-over best of seven (7) series: Vigan City vs. Sta. Catalina, Magsingal vs. Cabugao, San Vicente vs. Sto. Domingo, and Caoayan vs. San Juan. After the quarter final round, the top four (4) teams advances to the semi-final round: Vigan City, Caoayan, Magsingal and San Vicente.

Vigan City, the 2-time RVS Inter-Town Basketball Tournament opened their title defense and figures to be in for a challenge against a rejuvenated Magsingal team. The biggest obstacle for the Vigan City team in the tournament was mental fatigue and not physical exhaustion, but on June 18 (game 7), Vigan City team clinched the title to win the coveted Grand Slam at the University of Northern Philippines gymnasium. with a final score of 97-95.SPM John Patrick Singson, SPM Joy Benneth Orio and SPM Juan Carlo Medina joined Cong.
