The third week of July is observed as National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week to pay tribute to millions of Filipinos with disabilities recognizing their valuable contributions in nation – building and honor Apolinario Mabini, the Sublime Paralytic, who made a great contributions to the cause of the Philippine Revolution despite his disabilities.
This year’s theme is” Sa Istrakturang Accessible, Lahat ay Able (Accessible Structure, Everyone is Able).” It aims to stimulate public awareness of disability issues and concerns such as disability prevention, rehabilitation and equalization of opportunities for persons with disabilities (PWDs). This will strengthen the involvement of government and non-government organizations, including self-help organizations of persons with disabilities, the academe, professional groups and civil societies, the business sector, the media, and other entities.. It also encourages Filipino citizens to take active responsibility in the uplift of the economic and social conditions of the persons with disabilities, thereby encouraging them to take pro-active roles in nation-building.
Now on the 32nd year, the city government conducted the following activities: a thanks giving mass, parlor games, community picnic, free medical and optical check up and dental services, stakeholders forum on the Magna Carta for PWDs, computer literacy programs for PWDs and their parents, monitoring on the implementation of Batas Pambansa 344 or the Accessibility Law and awarding of the Ulirang PWD and Ulirang PWD family, which went to Ms. Paulina Alcartado of Barangay Ayusan Sur and Mr. And Mrs. Roger Etongan of Barangay Fatima respectively.
