Biguenos Observe Disaster Preparedness Consciousness Month 2014The City Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Council (CDRRMC) headed by Mayor Eva Medina put together various activities to celebrate this year’s Disaster Preparedness Consciousness Month. Anchored on the theme ‘Kahandaan at Kaligtasan ng Pamayanan, Pundasyon ng Kaunlaran’, the city government reached out to its constituents in the barrios.
The month –long event started with a Motorcade of the DRRM Sector around the city on July 4, 2014. The city’s disaster management equipment and vehicles graced the parade route, as a reassurance of readiness and capacities to manage calamities. A Mass officiated by Fr. Carlito Feria followed. It was held at the Main Sala of the Vigan City Hall.
July 10 saw the conduct of an Earth & Fire Drill for our children with disabilities at the Vigan Stimulation & Therapeutic Activity Center.
July 11 and July 25, were General Cleaning Days in the entire city.
From July 11 to 23, the CDRRMC trooped to the barangays to hold lectures primarily to cascade the city’s disaster risk reduction & management initiatives/concepts including fire protection, crime prevention and early warning system.
Neem trees were planted by the students in the different public school grounds last July 25 . City officials, CDRRMC members and department heads joined the people of San Pedro, Mindoro and Pantay Laud in planting “Kandaroma” and mangroves along the coastline. Mayor Medina emphasized that, we should not be content with just planting the seedlings; importance should be given to its sustenance to ensure survival.
Like in previous years, frontline service providers of the LGU and CDRRMC members were given Anti Flu shots to strengthen their immune system.
To culminate the Disaster Preparedness Consciousness Month, the 3nd Quiz D Prep (Disaster Preparedness) was held at the Vigan Culture and Trade Center. On its third year the following students topped the quiz: Elementary Category ( 24 entries) 1st Place – Aaron Balino – Vigan Central School, 2nd – Jarred Regua – Jose Singson Memorial School, 3rd – Rihana Lazo – St. Paul College of Ilocos Sur. Secondary Category (7entries)1st Place – Marc Earl Amorin – ISNHS, 2nd – Emerson Borillo – Divine Word College of Vigan, 3rd – Pearl Rose Queppet – UNP.
Till next year’s celebration, the Bigueños shall strive to make each day disaster preparedness consciousness day. /cpsdrrmo
